Scuttle

FAQ and troubleshooting

401: “invalid x-api-key” or “API rejected the key”

The key is wrong, revoked or from the wrong provider. A system environment variable overrides scuttle.env, so if the error says the key came from an environment variable, remove it: reg delete HKCU\Environment /v ANTHROPIC_API_KEY /f, open a new window, and put a fresh key in scuttle.env.

“No NVIDIA key” (or any “No … key”)

In scuttle.env a line starting with # is a comment. Delete the # in front of the key line, save, and restart Scuttle. Keys are read at startup.

404 on a model

The provider doesn’t know that model name. Type /models for valid names, or use an alias like /model nemotron. The full NVIDIA name is nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b.

pip install fails on a PC

Don’t use requirements.txt on a PC. It is for the Android build and pins Kivy and numpy. Use pip install -r requirements-pc.txt or run setup_windows.bat.

“No module named scuttle.clicks”

You are running crawl.py from an incomplete folder. Use the full bundle folder and run scuttle.bat from there.

Garbled characters in Windows cmd

Run Scuttle with scuttle.bat. It starts Python in UTF-8 mode and turns on colors. Windows Terminal shows the crab best.

Keys not found after editing scuttle.env

Save the file as UTF-8. Scuttle also reads UTF-16 and ANSI files in the Windows bundle. Run scuttle.bat --doctor to see which keys it can read.

Keep your keys private

Never paste keys into chats or screenshots. If one leaks, revoke it at the provider and make a new one.
